Abuja – The recent signing of the amendments to the 1999 Constitution by President Muhammadu Buhari as it affects the right of the states to generate, transmit and distribute electricity has been described as a welcome development.
Kunle Kola Olubiyo, President, Nigeria Electricity Consumer Protection Network stated this in a statement obtained by Vitalnews in Abuja.
He said the development was unprecedented, a bold step and a right step in the right direction.
According to Olubiyo, over concentration of power and management of natural resources cum economic activities in the hand of Federal Government , particularly in areas where the 36 states could do better has over the years turned Nigeria to a feeding bottle federalism.
“By implications, it has reduced the 36 States government that made up the federating units into lazy, unproductive , redundant and under- utilised entities.
“The recent development would no doubt enhance inclusive growth, upscale global economic competitive indexes , break the monopoly of the Federal Government in Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution , Rail Transport System , upscale End Users Customers right to choices/ alternatives while at the same time strengthen cash inflow from Foreign Direct Investment ( FDIs ) ..
“It will also partly fulfilled the aspirations and yearnings of the quest for resource control and true federalism, Olubiyo who also a member, Presidential Ad-hoc Committee on Review of Electricity Tariff in Nigeria explained. (vitalnewsngr.com)
