Commonwealth Games Boxing Champion, Jerry Okorodudu Dies At 64

Brisbane ’82 Commonwealth Games Bronze Medalist in boxing, Jeremiah Okorodudu aka Jerry Okorodudu is dead.

Okorodudu died Wednesday evening at the age of 64 years.

A former boxing coach, Okorodudu died after a protracted illness
at the intensive care unit of Brighton Hospital, Lawanson, Surulere, Lagos.

He was a bronze medalist at men’s middleweight boxing event of the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Australia.

‘Loud Mouth’ as he was fondly called by his admirers during his active boxing years has been down with partial stroke and diabetes for more than two years and his situation became worst early in the year.

Okorodudu, who hailed from Edo State also fought for Nigeria in the middleweight boxing event at the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, United States, and was for some time staff of the Sports Ministry is survived by his wife Mrs Adenike Okorodudu and five children.

President, Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBof C), Dr. Rafiu Ladipo in his reaction described the news of Okorodudu’s demise as sad and painful.

Ladipo said he learnt about the late boxer’s illness recently and was planning to pay a visit to him but shifted it because of the Ileya festival.

“I heard he was down last week and now he is dead. Really sad.

“I heard when I was going to Ibadan last week and I told the person who informed us that I will be going to see him this week but the Ileya festival change my movements and now that he’s dead, is sad,” he said.
