The Labour Party (LP) has given Mr. Peter Obi, its 2023 presidential 48-hour ultimatum to resign his membership from the party.
The LP issued the ultimatum to Obi following his reported involvement with a new political coalition.
In a statement on Wednesday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the Labour Party distanced itself from the coalition and warned that any of its members aligning with the group must also resign immediately.
“The Labour Party is not part of the so-called coalition.
“Any of our members who identifies with them must, within 48 hours, resign from the Labour Party,” the statement read.
Ifoh accused the coalition of being a gathering of “old, recycled, desperate, and frustrated politicians” and said it was laughable to suggest such an assemblage could deliver the “new Nigeria” promised by Obi and others in the 2023 elections.
“We have seen the type of people in this coalition.
“They are the same people who have mismanaged Nigeria for decades.
“They’re only seeking to relaunch themselves into power. That’s not how to build a new Nigeria,” Ifoh stated.
He also alleged that Obi has been holding “nocturnal meetings” with some Labour Party members, lobbying them to defect with him.
According to Ifoh, many of those approached have refused.
“Labour Party will not entertain people with dual agendas—those who claim to be with us by day and work for another party by night.
“We are not available for deception,” he said.
The party emphasized its belief that true political change can only come from within its own ranks and through the youth-driven movement it represents.
“Nearly 70 percent of Nigeria’s population are youths.
“They are tired of the old order. They won’t find their future among gerontocrats.
“The Labour Party remains the only platform that can realize the dream of a new Nigeria,” the statement added.
Ifoh concluded by urging party members to remain loyal and keep the party structure intact as the 2027 elections approach.
Peter Obi, who finished third in the 2023 presidential election, has not yet publicly responded to the ultimatum or confirmed his formal exit from the Labour Party.
