A civil society organisation,Conscience for Human Rights and Conflict Resolution (CHRCR), has called On Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, to immediately dissolve all 21 local government caretaker committees.
The CHRCR said Ododo should allow the Directors of Local Government to take charge of the affairs of the local governments till October 19 when elections will conducted to elect new officials.
“That is what should have been done in the first place rather than this illegal caretakership, as been pronounced by the famous judgment of the Supreme Court on the 11th July, 2024,” he said.
Idris Abdul Miliki , Executive Secretary, CHRCR, who signed the statement said the illegal caretaker chairmen put in place on the 5th July, 2024 by Kogi State House of Assembly for Six (6) months can no longer stand.
He said this is so because many of these “illegal chairmen may be willing to contest for the same elections through their political party, which will bring contradiction and further promote illegality and give unnecessary them advantage.”
Miliki further explained that since the Supreme Court in its judgment of July 11 ruled caretaker committees as illegal , it is legally wrong for the state government to continue to retain them.
“We call on the Kogi State Governor and his government, to quickly make resources available for SIEC, to enable it conduct credible, free, fair and Acceptable elections on the 19th October, 2024 as contained the just release timetable,” the statement said.
