CAF President Mourns Peter Rufai, Says Dodo Mayana Will Forever Live In Our Hearts

The President of the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF), Dr Patrice Motsepe, has paid emotional tribute on behalf of all 54 – Member Associations to the late Nigerian legendary goalkeeper, Peter Rufai.

This is as the African and global football community continue to mourn the death of Nigerian football legend who passed away on Thursday, July 3, at the age of 61.

“Peter Rufai is part of a special generation of African Football players who made the people of Nigeria and the entire African Continent very proud,” said Dr Motsepe in a statement released by CAF’s Communication Department on Friday.

Rufai, affectionately known as ‘Dodo Mayana’, was a commanding presence in goal for Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

He represented the nation at two FIFA World Cups (1994 and 1998) and several CAF Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, where he gained widespread respect for his skill, leadership, and sportsmanship.

Motsepe said : “He was an enormously talented footballer and was respected in Africa and globally.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, the Nigeria Football Federation (“NFF”) and its President Ibrahim Gusau, his former teammates, and the people of Nigeria.

“‘Dodo Mayana’ will forever live in our hearts and minds. May his Soul Rest in Peace.”

Rufai’s death has sent shockwaves across the footballing world, with tributes pouring in from fans, former teammates, and sports leaders.

“As Nigeria grapples with the loss of one of its most cherished sporting icons, his legacy stands tall as a symbol of excellence, pride, and unity for both Nigeria and Africa,” the release concluded.
