Lokoja – The Federal Government has temporarily reopened the Lokoja-Obajana-Kabba road in Kogi State to motorists.
The road which is still undergoing rehabilitation was re-opened to motorists on Wednesday due to security concerns.
The road was closed to motorists about five weeks ago to allow for repair of bridges and culverts washed away by heavy downpours in 2021 and this year.
Engineer Jimoh Kajogbola, Federal Controller of Works, Kogi State said on Thursday in Lokoja that the repair works which started on May 28 was scheduled to last seven weeks.
Kajogbola, explained that the reopening of the road was necessitated by kidnapping and robbing of motorists and passengers by bandits on the route diversion created pending the completion of repair works on the main road.
He also cited traffic logjams created on the route diversion as another reason for the temporary re-opening of the road.
“The reconstruction work is about 85 per cent completed as what is left is laying of Asphalt by the contractor for delivery.
“But we have to temporarily re-open the road for motorists to avoid the challenges and problems being encountered along the divertion route.
“Our expectations are that when the contractor is ready to lay the Asphalts, we shall again close up only the hours it shall be laid.
“The good thing about that is that vehicles can move on the road even immediately after the Asphalt is laid by the contractor, ” he explained.
The Controller thanked motorists and commutters for their understanding and cooperation during the five-week closure of the road.
According to him, the contractor will complete the rehabilitation works as scheduled on Aug 15. (NAN/vitalnewsngr.com)
