Former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu And his wife Beatrice who were earlier today arraigned before Uxbridge Magistrate Court in UK have been denied bail.
The couple had appeared before the court on charges relating to conspiracy to commit offence of human trafficking for organ harvesting.
The Alleged victim in this case is said to be a 15 – year old boy brought to the UK from Nigeria by Mr and Mrs Ekweremadu.
According to reports, the Ekweremadus have been denied bail and subsequently remanded in custody on the order of the court.
The case has also been adjourned to July 7th.
Before their arraingnment in court on Thursday, the Specialist Crime Team of the Metropolitan Police in London had arrested and detained Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice.
The Metropolitan Police had in statement on Thursday said that “Two people have been charged with conspiring to bring a child to the UK in order to harvest organs.
“Beatrice Nwanneka Ekweremadu, 55, and Ike Ekweremadu, 60, have been remanded in custody and will appear at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court today.
“Charges were brought against the pair, who are from Nigeria, following an investigation by the Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime team.
“A child has now been safeguarded.
“The investigation was launched after detectives were alerted to potential offences under modern slavery legislation in May, 2022.
“A child has been safeguarded and we are working closely with partners on continued support.
“As criminal proceedings are now under way, we will not be providing further details.”
Ekweremadu, a lawyer by profession is a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He has served in the Senate since May, 2003.
He was Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate for three consecutive terms. (vitalnewsngr.com)
