A veteran sports journalist and former NTA staff, Mr Niyi Oyeleke is dead
Niyi died in the afternoon of Tuesday, March 3, 2026 after a prolonged illness.
His death was confirmed on Tuesday evening by Ibitoye Shittu on a WhatsApp group.
“It’s sad to announce the death of Offa born veteran Sports Journalist, Niyi Oyeleke..Rest in Peace Egbon,” Shittu wrote.
Also, an associate posted on Offa Descendants Union (ODU), Lagos Branch WhatsApp group.
He wrote : “Good evening, friends.
“It is with deep sorrow that we share the death of one of us today: Mr Niyi Oyeleke.
“Niyi passed away this afternoon after a prolonged illness.
“May his soul rest in peace. May Almighty Allah grant him aljannat fridaus and comfort his family. RIP Niyi.”
The late Niyi Oyeleke will be buried according to Islamic rites today, Wednesday, March 4, 2026 at Offa, Kwara State.
Oyeleke was a respected figure in Nigeria’s sports media industry.
Oyeleke was widely known for his professional exploits in both public and private broadcasting.
He served as a Production Manager and analyst with SuperSport Nigeria, where he was deeply involved in high-level content production, particularly around the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), as well as international broadcast operations.
His transition into private sports broadcasting followed an earlier stint at the Nigerian Television Authority, where he began his journalism career and built a solid foundation in sports reporting and production.
Oyeleke was a prominent member of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN).
He served as Chairman of the Lagos State chapter of SWAN, and completed the chapter’s secretariat and championing improved welfare for members.
