Nigeria’s defence Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned his appointment, with immediate effect.
Badaru’s sudden resignation came few hours after the former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa met with President Bila Tinubu in Aso Rock.
Badaru in his resignation letter to President Tinubu said he was resigning on personal health grounds.
Bayo Onanuga,Special Adviser to the President, on Information and Strategy, confirmed the resignation of Badaru in a statement on Monday.
He said President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and thanked Abubakar for his services to the nation.
President Tinubu will likely inform the Senate of Badaru’s successor later this week, Onanuga said.
Badaru Abubakar, 63, was a two-term governor of Jigawa state from 2015 to 2023.
He was appointed as a minister on August 21, 2023, by President Tinubu.
His resignation comes amid President Tinubu’s declaration of a national security emergency, with plans to elaborate on its scope in due course.
Political observers are already saying that the immediate past CDS, Gen. Christopher Musa, may emerged the Nigeria’s new defence Minister.
Musa is from Kaduna State, North West, just like Badaru.
It is being discussed that Musa’s visit to Aso Rock for a meeting with President Tinubu is a precursor to a major shake-up by Tinubu in the wake of growing insecurity in the country.
Musa arrived at the State House at about 7:03 p.m. and was led into the president’s office by a senior security official.
