President Tinubu Orders Army To Crush Terrorism, Insurgency

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has charged the Nigerian Army and other security agencies to decisively confront terrorists, bandits, insurgents, and separatists threatening the country’s peace and unity, declaring that the time to act is now.

President Tinubu stated this through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the grand finale of the 2025 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) held on Sunday at Murtala Square in Kaduna.

Tinubu vowed his administration’s full support for the armed forces in their mission to defend the nation.

“To the officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army, I say this with absolute clarity: the time to rise is now,” Tinubu declared.

“You have my full authorisation and the trust of the Nigerian people to confront and defeat those who seek to undermine our nation.

“You are my confidence, my support, and my prayers,” he said.

The President described the threats of terrorism, banditry, insurgency, and separatist agitations as grave existential dangers, warning that these forces “do not discriminate, they destroy churches and mosques alike, and orphan children without asking their tribe or faith.”

Tinubu assured troops that their welfare, morale, and operational capacity would remain his government’s priority, pledging investments in modern equipment, intelligence, and personnel training to ensure the military stays battle-ready.

“We are not oblivious of the challenges that confront our nation,” he said.

“But let it be said plainly: our response must be united, calm and uncompromising.

“I assure you that this administration stands firmly with you on that path,” he noted.

Tinubu paid an emotional tribute to fallen soldiers and wounded personnel, emphasising that their sacrifices would never be forgotten.

“Many of our finest have fallen in the line of duty. Their blood will not be shed in vain; their memory will endure through generations,” he added.

Earlier, Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, praised the Nigerian Army’s evolution from its humble origins in 1863, highlighting that its greatest strength remains “the indomitable spirit, valour, and unwavering commitment of the Nigerian soldier.”

He explained that this year’s NADCEL theme, “Developing the Soldier First Concept”, highlights the importance of troop welfare and professionalism in transforming the Army.

The grand finale of the Nigerian Army Day Celebration featured colourful military parades, tactical demonstrations, and an exhibition of advanced weaponry, drawing loud applause from dignitaries, traditional rulers, members of the diplomatic corps, and thousands of enthusiastic spectators.

Among the dignitaries in attendance were former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon; Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani; Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar; Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle; Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa; and former Chiefs of Army Staff—Lieutenant Generals Azubuike Ihejirika, Tukur Yusuf Buratai, and Faruk Yahaya.

Also present were serving service chiefs, members of the National and State Assemblies, and representatives of the traditional institution.
