Zamfara – Two emirs in Zamfara State have been arraigned before a magistrate court in Gusau, the state capital for alleged conspiracy, aiding and abetting banditry.
The two emirs are Alhaji Abubakar Atiku of Zurmi Emirate and Alhaji Husaini Umar of Dansadau Emirate.
The Emirs had earlier been suspended and detained in Government House, Gusau for several months without trial.
It is believed that sustained pressure from human rights organisations across the country eventually forced the state government to arraign them in court on Thursday .
Counsel to the defendants, Ahmad Kotorkoso said government delay in arraigning the two emirs was due to “obvious security reasons.”
However, during the arraignment, the presiding magisrate was not in court.
