Nigerians Urged To Be More Committed To Protection, Sustainability Of Environment

Nigerians have been urged to show more commitment to the protection of the environment.

Mr Adinoyi Haruna, General Manager, Human Resources, Dangote Cement Plc, Obajana Plant, Kogi State made the charge while speaking at the opening of a two-day training workshop for Journalists at Dangote Academy, Obajana.

He said this has become necessary because of the importance of the environment to human existence.

Haruna explained that all activities are derived from the environment, hence the need to have a change of attitude towards the environment.

According to him, humans need environment more than the environment needs them .

” It is in the interest of humans and our responsibility to do all to protect the environment and make it safe for all,” he said.

On the theme of the training workshop ” Reporting The Environment For Sustainability ” , Haruna said Dangote Group’s decision to organise the workshop for journalists was deliberate.

He said it was to underscore the seriousness Dangote Group attached to the protection and sustainability of the environment.

Haruna said the company is very conscious of the impact of its operations on the environment, hence the deployment of ultra-modern and evironment friendly equipment for production.

He reminded the over 50 journalists participating in the training workshop that the protection of the environment is a collective responsibility.

The General Manager said Dangote Group expected the participants to increase their reportage of the environment at the end of the workshop and share the knowledge gain with their colleagues and other Nigerians.

The General Manager, Special Duty of the company, Mr Ademola Adeyemi spoke on the company’s responsibility to its four host communities.

He said the company Responsibility to its host communities is being guided by what he called Community Development Agreement.

Under the agreement, he said that the company had constructed 16 boreholes, built hospitals, award scholarships , built schools, construct police stations and provided employment opportunities to indigenes of its host communities.

The two-day  training workshop which was organised by Dangote Group in partnership with Climate Africa Media Initiative and Centre (CAMIC) was held from July 17-18.

Participants were drawn from Kogi, Kwara and Benue States and the Federal Capital Territory.(vitalnewsngr.com)
