NEDC Spends N75bln On 647 Projects In 2 years

Maiduguri – The North East Development Commission (NEDC) says it spent N75,098,550,001 to complete 647 education, health and other infrastructure developments in the North East.

It listed other projects to cover Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), housing, agriculture, power and environment sectors of the economy.

Unveiling the completion of the projects during a parley with media executives in Maiduguri on Monday, the Managing Director of the commission, Mohammed Alkali, revealed that 2,500 houses built in five states of the region had gulped N17.5 billion.

He said the construction of 1,000 housing units in Ngowom community was completed at the cost of N2.92 billion.

The Managing Director said three bridges at Kudzum, Dilechim and Wuro-Ngayandi in Adamawa State cost N1.43 billion while Mayo Ndaga Bridge in Taraba State gulped N202 million.

He said, “The 54km Mutai-Ngalda Road in Yobe State costs N12.199 billion; Alkaleri-Futuk Road – N2.83 billion; 53km Gombe Abba-Kirfi Road in Bauchi and Gombe also cost N11.697 billion”

“Also, 22.5km Zabarmari-Ngowom Road in Borno State was constructed a the cost of N13.553 billion; 32km Dabna-Garkida Road in Adamawa State at N6.269 billion; 2.5km Road at Adamawa State College of Education, Hong – N498.55 million while Jabbi Lamba-Belel Transborder Road, also in Adamawa State gulped N1.192 billion”.

He explained that the completed projects were in the first phase of the Master Plan for the recovery and stabilisation of six insurgency affected states.

He said the strategic activities in the first phase were focused on building collective peace that would prevent the recurrence of insurgency and other conflicts in the region.

On the completion of environmental and ecological projects, he said “the commission engaged 300 youths and women in waste recycling, efficient stove production and use to become self-reliant.”

He’s added that they were also sensitised on environment protection and climate change mitigation. (Daily Trust)
