Contrary to some media reports, Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, said 59 residents were killed in Yelewata, a border community between Benue and Nasarawa States.
The killings followed a violent attack allegedly launched on the community by suspected herdsmen.
Governor Alia made the disclosure on Sunday while addressing journalists in Makurdi.
According to him, the grim casualty figure was established through a joint headcount conducted by security personnel and bereaved families.
Among those killed were military personnel and officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The security men lost their lives while defending the community from the bloody attack.
The governor revealed that the assailants crossed into Benue from Nasarawa State, sparking a wave of terror in the Yelewata community.
He confirmed that the invasion was premeditated and carried out with lethal precision.
Governor Alia expressed appreciation to his Nasarawa State counterpart, Governor Abdullahi Sule, for the timely exchange of intelligence that helped in identifying the threat and managing the aftermath.
Despite the support, the scale of the attack led to widespread loss of life and destruction.
“Based on the coordinated efforts of security operatives and families of the victims, we have confirmed the deaths of 59 individuals, including security agents.
One woman was also killed on the Nasarawa side during the incursion,” Governor Alia stated.
Governor Alia revealed the casualty figures shortly after receiving the report of a panel of inquiry set up to investigate militia-related activities in the Sankera axis of the state.
He described the report as critical to the state’s ongoing efforts to end the cycle of violence and insecurity.
He added that the Benue State government will forward the panel’s findings to relevant security and intelligence agencies, and those found culpable will face investigation and possible prosecution.
“We are determined to restore peace to every corner of Benue.
“The findings of this panel will guide our next steps, and those responsible for destabilizing our communities will be held accountable,” Alia assured.
