Nigerian Athletes participating in the ongoing 13th edition of the African Games taking place in Ghana will go home with $3,000, about N3.5million should they win gold in any of the events.
This was confirmed on Sunday during a meeting with the athletes in Accra, where the Minister of Sports, Senator John Enoh disclosed this.
Silver medalists will get $2,000, while bronze medalists will get $1,000.
The amounts but does not include other camp allowances which athletes will be entitled to.
The development seems to have ignited passion for victory amongst the athletes.
In badminton, two Nigerians will slug it out in the men’s final for ultimate prize money of $3,000 each.
Also in the men’s doubles, Nigeria’s athletes hope is high and this is also the case with the women category.
In weightlifting and wrestling, Nigeria have sealed semifinal spots and hopes look high for the athletes to reach the finals where the tussle for the ultimate prize money will be ignited and athletes more likely to smile home.
If there is an improvement in Nigeria’s performance at the end of today, Nigeria who are currently sixth on the medal table could climb up to 4th or more, but that will also be determined by the level of medal haul in their various disciplines.( vitalnewsngr.com)
