The President, Nigeria Weightlifting Federation, (NWF), Dr Ibrahim Abdul has lauded Team Nigeria Weightlifters , following their historical performance at the ongoing 2023 Africa Games Weightlifting event.
Nigeria Weightlifters on Monday won all the nine gold medals in the three categories competed for in the Day 3 event of Weightlifting at the University of Ghana, Legon.
Adijat Olarinoye won three gold medals in 55kg, Rafiatu Lawal won three gold medals in 59kg just as Edidiong Umoafia claimed all three gold medals in 67kg men class.
The feats have been commended by the NWF President who expressed delight with the performance of the team so far.
Speaking with NWF Media Crew, the president said the performance is as a result of commitment on the side of athletes as well as the organisational plan of the federation and charged them to go all out and conquer Africa.
”We took off with five medals on Sunday and today (Monday) we have nine gold medals. I am delighted but the job has not yet been concluded.
“The commitment and sacrifices of the players are paying off and also the organisational disposition of the federation.
“Nigeria is a dominant force in weightlifting and that is what we are targeting in Accra,” Abdul said.
He lauded the federal government through the Ministry of Sports for their efforts in camping the athletes and seeing to their welfare.
In 2019 Africa Games, Nigeria Weightlifters won a total of 50 medals comprising 16 gold, 16 silver and 18 bronze.
Currently, Team Nigeria Weightlifting has won a total of 14 medals – nine gold, two silver and three bronze medals.
Nigeria will continue her medals hunting adventure today, Tuesday, March 12, 2024 as Ruth Ayodele and Joy Eze will be competing in 64kg and 71kg women categories respectively by 10am. (vitalnewsngr.com)
