Abuja – The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday amended Clause 84 to allow for direct, indirect, and consensus options of nominating candidates for elections by political parties.
The Senate had earlier introduced direct primary option as the only method of picking candidates by parties for elections.
Also inserted in the amended Electoral bill by the Senate was the funding of the direct primary by the Federal Government.
President Muhammadu Buhari refused to assent to the bill, saying imposing direct primaries on political parties’ll cause trouble in polity.
He asked NASS to rework the bill, remove direct primaries and return it to him for assent.
With the amendment by the Senate today, the road is now clear for the signing of the bill into a law Buhari.(vitalnews)
