The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has welcome the life sentence conviction handed down to Dr Abubakar Mustapha Danraka, after being found guilty of rape.
NAPTIP described the sentence as a significant victory for justice.
The convict, Dr Abubakar Mustapha Danraka, was the former Chief Pharmacist of the National Hospital, Abuja.
Professor Fatima Waziri-Azi, the Director General of NAPTIP, gave the commendation to the judiciary in a statement.
She commended the judiciary for its commitment to upholding justice under the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act (VAPP).
She expressed her gratitude to all who contributed to the successful prosecution of the case.
The Director-General affirmed NAPTIP’s dedication to continued collaboration with partners and stakeholders, aiming to increase convictions and reduce impunity in cases of sexual violence.
She also highlighted that this rape conviction marked the third such success in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in 2023.
The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, in Kubwa, presided over by Justice Akanbi-Yusuf, convicted Dr Abubakar Mustapha Danraka and sentenced him to life imprisonment for rape (sodomy) under Section 1 of the VAPP Act of 2015.
This ruling brings to a close a three-year controversy surrounding the case, which garnered significant attention from stakeholders across the country.
Dr Danraka was arrested on March 27th, 2020, for raping a minor in his estate in Abuja.
He was said to have lured the victim to his apartment and engaged in non-consensual intercourse with him after administering a stupefying drink. ( VON/vitalnewsngr.com)
