The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has reported a loss of approximately N6 billion after a 12-day power outage that severely impacted both business and daily activities in its service regions of Kano, Jigawa, and Katsina.
Sani Bala Sani, Head of Corporate Communications at KEDCO, revealed that the outage also resulted in the vandalism of 70 transformers, aggravating the company’s challenges.
Sani explained that in response, KEDCO has implemented a load-shedding system to stabilize supply, prioritizing industrial and commercial power feeds to aid economic recovery in Kano, which is known for its industrial activity.
The outage began following a tripping incident on a 330kV transmission line, cutting off power to several states in Nigeria’s northwestern and northeastern regions.
Thanks to efforts by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the power grid was gradually restored, and communities across the northern area began to receive electricity again by Wednesday.
Sani highlighted that TCN’s commitment was instrumental in reconnecting affected states to the national grid, bringing an end to the blackout and enabling KEDCO to resume regular distribution.
